Joana is Portugal’s SSL Business Developer Manager. She is also the co-founder and director of Native Scientist, an award-winning non-profit enterprise that tackles educational disadvantage and inspires the young generation to science and science-related careers. In 2017, she received the 2017 MIT Innovator Under 35 distinction for the humanitarian project that she co-founded in 2013 and that currently operates in 6 different European countries. Before transitioning to the private sector, Joana completed her PhD in Molecular Microbiology at Imperial College and was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at i3S – Universidade do Porto, the biggest research institute on biomedical sciences in Portugal. She has published 10 scientific articles in internationally peer-reviewed journals. In the last four years, Joana received four awards for her entrepreneurial and science communication skills.
