Job Description

This research scientist position requires active involvement on membrane production, somatic cell isolation including the derivation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), generation of differentiated cell types, cancer stem cells and disease modelling, genome editing and in vitro drug screening. This position requires actual hands-on knowledge in membrane technology, stem cell biology, iPSC reprogramming, differentiation, cancer stem cell-disease modelling, genome editing and drug screening. This position also requires expertise and experience in Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) for membrane preparation, hydrogel microencapsulation, cell culturing, molecular biology techniques, immunofluorescence microscopy, immunohistochemistry (OCT, paraffin embedding, tissue sectioning and Matrigel plug assay), cellular cryopreservation, western blotting, molecular cloning and gene expression analysis such as real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and advance transcriptomic analysis -Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)

Key Responsibilities and Authorities

  • Conduct research in stem cell and cancer cell technologies, following all required procedures and the Health & Safety guidelines in place;
  • To carry out research on cells separation for membrane technology application.
  • To product testing and develop a novel platform for cell culture, including prototype development and testing on-site;
  • To develop a unique cancer research stem cells platform combination with membrane separation technology.
  • To interact with the PIs, Research Associates, PhD students, and external collaborators of the project.
  • To write papers summarising research findings for publication in journals of high international standing.
  • To present the work at national and international conferences.
  • To contribute a summary of the work to the final project report
  • To update and follow all the required Standard Operating Procedures as well as Health & Safety guidelines in place;
  • To conduct general scientific research around the topics and requirements of the company and its product development strategy;
  • To keep an accurate record of all work performed;
  • To liaise with the Cell Separations team at Smart Separations as well as our partners at the University of Surrey and other relevant stakeholders;
  • To support the Smart Separations R&D team in manufacturing tasks that may be required from time to time (sprint tasks);
  • To maintain a good working relationship with our stakeholders;
  • To participate at meetings, conferences, talks and others as and when instructed, and to prepare notes from the same to be shared with the team;

Person Specification

Essential

  • PhD in a field relevant to Cell Separations / Cancer Research, including biomedical engineering
  • Post-Doc experience with cell culture
  • 5-10 years of experience in working within a lab setting, with independent thought-process
  • Hands-on knowledge in membrane technology, stem cell biology, iPSC reprogramming, differentiation, cancer stem cell-disease modelling, genome editing and drug screening.
