Smart Separations Ltd has developed a revolutionary filtration system that can be tailored to suit many different applications in the underdeveloped yet global £48 billion separation/filtration industry. The London-based startup, founded by Dr. Hugo Macedo in July 2013, will provide a more controlled, versatile, and low-cost solution to several industries, including blood donations, stem cell research, improving air quality, and even food and drink processing. Exactly 18 months ago, this seemed a far-fetched idea, difficult to convince anyone to be possible – who could blame them?! The only available resources were a garage, family and friends and a great desire to change the World. After reading “The Visionary Business” by Marc Allen, Hugo got inspired by learning that successful businesses can also grow out of humbleness and vision, and that if you can dream it, you can achieve it. And that’s what a small boy from a small Portuguese village set out to further attest.
Having already received UK government grants for market validation and product development totalling £150k during our short existence, Smart Separations has a patent-pending technology on a novel method to produce resistant ceramic filters with holes in the range of 1 to 30µm (or the thickness of a hair). Having recently received the financial support of a business angel, and a highly skilled and diverse team behind, the company is now developing its strategic go-to-market plan to help improving human quality of life.
